Description4B, Rue de la Puade, once a 16th century tannery in the oldest part of Cotignac just under it spectacular cliffs, is now a house of character five minutes’ walk from the centre of this most sought after village in the middle Var. The house has been sympathetically restored to provide the owners and their guests with a perfect blend of comfort and of charming Provence character. About CotignacCotignac has long been considered one of the most beautiful and interesting villages in Provence with a history dating back to Roman times. It is surrounded by pine clad hills, olive groves and vineyards. Cliffs formed of the porous calcium rock ‘tufa’ dominate and protect Cotignac. A population of around two thousand locals supports several restaurants and bars, excellent food shops to provide every need, several enticing ‘interior’ emporiums, a fabulous kilim carpet retailer, together with three or four antique shops – in short a veritable retail therapy paradise! The Tuesday market is not to be missed. The historic village of Cotignac is in itself the major draw and has a most attractive central ‘square’ shaded by plane trees and set above the street. This is filled mainly with outdoor tables from the cafes and restaurants and is the hub of the Tuesday market. Other beautiful villages are Aups, Villecroze, Tourtour, Salernes, Entrecasteaux and Lorgues – to name but a few. In season there are jazz, classical and rock concerts, also fetes, antique/brocante markets, and firework displays. Carces (10 mins drive) has a good art gallery. Check out www.beyond.fr/villages for further information. Nearby Abbaye du Thoronet (between Draguignan and Brignoles) is a fine example of an old Cistercian abbey (circa 1140) and Abbaye de la Celle a twelfth century Royal Benedictine abbey stands just outside Brignoles. Les Gorges du Verdon and the famous Lac St. Croix are a 25 minutes drive. St. Tropez is only 1h away, when peak traffic permits. Nearest golf courses are at Barbaroux (near Brignoles - about 30 mins) and the challenging St Endreol (near Le Muy about 50 mins). You should book tee off times in advance.
